Manchester Central Library: Hilary Hartigan

Covid-19 restrictions have ended, but its legacy is that our offering of meetings and events has changed. We now offer a mix of in-person meetings at the Manchester Central Library and meetings online via Zoom. Partly this is because we have met members worldwide and partly because some speakers also prefer to present online; of course, we have the possibility of engaging speakers who live farther afield who would never, otherwsie, be able to meet with us.

Our normal venue for meetings is the Performance Space, Ground Floor, Manchester Central Library.

Please be aware that parking in Manchester City Centre is available (the multi-storey by the Midland Hotel is populpar) but public transport is the better option. The Metrolink trams stop outside the main library entrance, there are park and ride tram stops around Manchester and trams are quite frequent. Please ensure that you have a valid pass or have purchased a ticket before boarding the tram; the ticketing system has been updated and you can now ‘swipe in’ with a debit card at the tram station and ‘swipe out’ at your destination station with the same card – the correct fare will be debited to your bank account at the end of the day. For most one-off journeys this is cost-effective but for more frequent travellers it is worth checking with Metrolink online to see if a cheaper option is available. The Metrolink app for mobile phones also displays line status, worth a click before setting out.

There is a taxi rank next to the library and bus stops are located within a few minutes’ walk. Train stations are within walking distance, there are also free buses that might get you from a station to nearer to the Library; tram connections and taxi ranks are also available and there is a cycle park close to the library.

To see an interactive map of the district please go to the Map page here.

Inside the library building

You can enter the Library through the main entrance (there is a slope at the side of the steps which makes access easy) or through the glass-covered entrance in Library Walk. From either of these entrances you can walk into the centre of the ground floor which you will recognise from the picture above. The Performance Space is to the left of the picture, you can choose to access the slightly higher level by the short flight of steps or the slope on the left or by using the disabled access lift. Society volunteers will be on hand to sign you in to the meeting room.

The MLFHS helpdesk is also on this floor and is to the far right of this picture, by the tall windows.

Additional information can be found on the Society’s ‘Find Us’ section in the section at the foot of this page.
