Council archives

The Dunedin City Council archives cover a significant period of New Zealand history in the area administered by the Dunedin City Council and its predecessors.

In 1983, Dunedin City Council was the first local authority in New Zealand to set up archives. Since then the collection has continued to expand to include a range of things related to DCC and its predecessors. The archives include the records from local authorities, including early town boards, district roads boards, borough and county councils, and the city council.

The archives department answers public enquiries and specialises in property, building and land information from 1857 onwards. Sources include ratesbooks dating back to the 1850s, cadastral maps, aerial photography and building plans.
